The ego, my identity with passing thoughts, feelings, and sensations, wants to be in charge of the process and consequences of gaining essence-awareness. We want God on our terms. But the reality is that we cannot do anything to bring this experience to us, nor can we control how it will transform our perspective or what it will require when it comes to the willing heart. When we consciously stop fighting, consciously stop trying to change or ignore what is, we become available to experiencing what we are. And in the moment when we move into that great silence and taste the stillness and joy we are, we shake our heads, not knowing to laugh or cry as we see our resistance to what is as the silliest and saddest way to spend our lives, the most futile waste of our precious time together, as the painfully obvious cause of all the suffering in our hearts and the world.
